1879

Heinrich Wilhelm Appel opens a colonial goods store in Hanover. Known as the "Sugar Appel" due to his fondness for the sugar trade, Heinrich Wilhelm Appel soon expands his range to include mustard, spices, and industrially produced, high-quality marinades. With Bismarck herring, a pickled herring specialty, Germany's most traditional fish and delicatessen brand is born.
 

1905

Resounding success with the first industrially produced "mayonnaise". This delicacy, previously only available as an expensive imported product, quickly becomes a bestseller in the product range. Son Heinz joins the company.

1909

The artist Änne Koken designs the Appel trademark. The result: the lobster with the large claws that is still used today.

1910

Appel wins gold medals at the Paris World Exhibition for its products in tubes: Appel crab extract, Appel mustard paste and Appel anchovy paste.

1912

Heinz Appel's love of quality inspires him to replace the hitherto common term "Delicatesse" with his own word creation: "Feinkost". The trendy word becomes an integral part of the company name and today stands for an entire industry.

At the end of the 1930s, Appel is the largest German delicatessen company with over 1,000 products.

The Appel success story is interrupted by the Second World War. After 1945, however, Appel becomes more and more successful from year to year. Sustainably strengthened by the alliance with the Frenzel company in Düsseldorf.

Appel relocates its site to Cuxhaven and employs 350 people there.

2008

Appel becomes market leader in the canned fish segment* and regularly adds product innovations to its range.

The change of ownership to Maris Food GmbH will sustainably strengthen and expand the production site in Cuxhaven and the Appel brand.
